We are so excited to host Nancy Prior's prints at Relish from Jan 17 to Feb 17th! Here is a snapshot of her series at the No 2 Print Shop in SE Portland. From the moment I walked in the Open Studio tour last summer, I knew I had an artistic friend.

Instantly, I was drawn to the Antique Press they are known for, but seeing both adults and children make their version of art by using various cut-out shapes, objects, colors, tools and winding it through the press on the most beautiful paper.

Oh, I wish those days were still here again. We look forward to sharing more about Nancy's artist open house reception mid February for the final week.

Crafted Systems Wall Art + Will Paul Photography

It's January and I can't believe it. We've had a number of featured artists the last few months, but these three stand out for me -- Crafted Systems wall art and vessels, Willy Paul etched photography on steel plates and his wife, Kris Paul, for her Japanese-inspired ceramics.

It's amazing how much work can go into the subtle details of a handmade piece. To me, that makes all the difference vs a general shape that can be made by the thousands on an assembly line.

In summary, I feel it's the subtlety of simple things that make ALL the difference in design.

South African Interiors Inspiration

I recently spent 3 weeks in South Africa, starting in Cape Town and ending up near Johannesburg on Safari. In short, I can't share everything yet, but I was tremendously inspired. My greatest love is traveling to far away places, staying with locals and experiencing their food, design, inspiration and creativity from the cultural "styles" of a region. I will be sharing bits and pieces over the next few months (i.e. as I go through the 2K photos!), starting today with this custom sofa company called Casamento at the Biscuit Mill. Check out the various hand-made designs, many of which are completely one-off designs and each a little different. Also, loved this threaded art from Erica Elk here. Setting the Perfect Holiday Table

As a 'non-cooker', my favorite part of the holidays every year is decorating the table- whether it be choosing the linens or making unique name cards for the table.

Decorating this new Mash Studio dining table we just got in reminded me of my favorite task and how the little details of table dressing add up to make such an impact on friends and family this time of year.
My table this year will feature some of my favorites; Iittala glassware, Rosenthal China, and this new year the new Chilewich Dahlia charger in silver.

Here's to hoping all your little details come together for a great Thanksgiving holiday!

Portland Open Studios Inspiration this weekend

I write a day after one of my favorite days in a long while-- Portland Open Studios, like a drug for the "handmade creative". In my usual highly curated approach, I scour the sites of an estimated 100 studios, to find my top 15-20 artists from various mediums. With only 5 hours to spend, taking in the best of ceramics, mixed media, oil, sculpture, illustration and works on paper, I feel like running the marathon after this experience. Here are a few of my highlights to share: Enjoy! Kris Paul ceramics, her husband Willy Paul photography, Rachel Austin oil and map paintings (one of which I had to buy), Puji Ceramics, No 2 Print Studio and last, but not least, our favorite, Therese Murdza original paintings and works on paper. All in all, a crazy prolific day for design in Portland. I still have these two to experience next, with camera in hand: Tim Loh Chinese paintings and Katherine Mead's collage pieces. We're heading to Iceland Tuesday, so design is there next...

I remember the first time I saw the wallpaper samples arrive from NewWall -- the new manufacturer of Marimekko wallpaper. My obsession with MakeLike Wallpaper!

I guess I'm officially on a wallpaper kick these days, but I just had to share a local wallpaper company, MakeLike, which we have been following for some time now. They produce everything from hand screen-printed wallpapers, tea towels, posters and even a full range of product development services. I love this pattern 'Zig Zag' from their new Forest collection. Perfect for the cozy little reading nook so you can feel like you're reading in a a charming storybook forest. I hear next up is a geometry series... can't wait to see samples! Cheers, Carey

When I see this wallpaper I envison my future tiny little cottage on the coast of Nova Scotia- super clean and modern except for this great rustic element on the walls. Archiform Shop Tour and Interiors Collaboration

Carey and I had such an inspirational day yesterday. It all began at a clients home with the goal of helping her create a functional Rug for the Living Room, but not too fancy for their budget and two little kids. We decided on FLOR in the end, but the pure wool variety. Next up, was a tour with our local Archiform and meeting with the co-owner, Anne De Wolf. They have a roster of amazing Portland historical renovations and recently, a few mid-century homes that we may help with the interiors. Here are a few shots of their cabinet shop and the salvaged Container Guest house they are remodeling! A day in the life of a designer and the people behind the scenes making beautiful and sustainable environments!

Custom Powder Coated Steel w/Douglas Fir side tables

I was so happy to deliver these custom, locally made side tables alongside our local Quarter Twenty furniture design studio. We started with some measurements and a quick sketch I had in mind a few months ago. The goal was to balance the linear and rounded elements of their other furnishings, but have tables in raw material with important functional drawers for books and bedside necessities. We scoured the home decor world for nice, functional side tables in steel, with a drawer, but all came up short. Enjoy!

A great example of how Marimekko patterns defy time & fleeting trends to prove that you can successfully juxtapose Modern elements with biomimic ideals. The 'Tuuli' pattern, one of my favorites, is the perfect example of how timeless graphic patterns have the power to translate into varying elements of design; from fashion to home accessories, to anything your mind can think of with their fabrics. Artist: Leah Nobilette Location: Portland About:

Leah Nobilette received a BFA in ceramics from Western State College of Colorado in the spring of 2001. In 2004, simplifying her college thesis of textured raku works, Leah developed her extremely popular line of hand-made spiked bowls and vases.

This unique product line is not just functional, but uniquely decorative and pleasingly tactile. The fragile-looking spiky exteriors are surprisingly sturdy and dishwasher safe, and the bowls have brightly colored interiors that are food safe.

Leah also makes a colorful line of everyday bowls and cups with smooth exteriors. Like her spiked pieces, the pieces of Leah’s everyday line are constructed from white earthenware that Leah throws by hand on a kick wheel.

Leah lives in Portland, Oregon with her soon to be husband Shawn. *We just got more of Leah's work in the store!! This ridiculously popular line is so wonderful with its bold colors and tactile exterior. And yes, you can feel those spikes! I went to school and got my degree in architecture, because someone told me I'd never be able to do it. The discipline really suited my personality and I enjoyed the struggle, the sleep deprivation, and learning to have a critical eye. I graduated in 1996 from Penn State University and moved forward seeking a climate change.

I relocated to Phoenix Arizona. It was there that I took my first class in metal smithing. I enjoyed it, but couldn't take the heat, and felt the need to relocate again. Everyone I knew was living on the east coast, so I moved further west.

I landed in San Francisco where I met my husband and continued to work as an architect. We got a dog and moved to east bay. I worked in the garage on jewelry relentlessly and realized I liked it a lot more than my day job.

We have since moved to Portland Oregon and have two babies and I'm no longer an architect, but still stubborn and still making jewelry.

*Melissa is another artist I just met last week at first thursday. She brought in so much new stuff! This is probably the cutest ornament I have ever seen. Made of metal and powder coated. There is also a lamb, a bunny, a birdie, I want them all! Price is $12 each.

Company: Tlaag studio of the last attempt at greatness Location: Portland, Oregon About: studio of the last attempt at greatness was started in 2009 by Sara Huston and John Paananen in an effort to challenge current design standards and expectations. Tlaag focuses on making specific pieces with a strong point of view. They also tackle a variety of scales from table top objects to living structures. Tlaag also loves to take on commissioned projects. *Ugh, these are just so wonderful it hurts! They are hand made, so each one turns out different even if they try to make them similar. Carey here, likened them to a snowflake! They are also made of scrap material. There is nothing better than making some beautiful out of what is usually considered to be waste. You have to love artists that are mindful of sustainability! Each are $30, well worth the money, they will last forever!

The garlands shown here are actually the "waste" material that comes from her other pieces, rugs, hot pads, coasters, runners etc. So she uses every possible piece to make even more beautiful things! Artist: Johnathan Langston Location: Portland, Oregon About: Jonathan Langston is an alumni of the Oregon College of Art and Craft. His studio is located at the Ford Building in SE Portland. Jonathan begins with a 2D design on paper. Each form is first hand-thrown. A mold is then taken of the original to be used for slip casting, allowing Jonathan to work with duplicates. This process provides opportunity to alter each piece individually while staying true to the original form. The vessels become uniformly distinct. *Jonathan came in earlier this week and brought a new set of bottles! Great pewter color and so shiny you can see me taking a picture of them right in the middle! So pretty!

Marianne is a textile designer who studied at the Boras Textile Design school and has been working as a designer in her own company for many years.
